Background

The Lions River Fire Protection Association (LRFPA), is a voluntary Association of landowners, a not for profit entity and registered in terms of the National Veld & Forest Act 101 of 1998.  The LRFPA is responsible for the co-ordination and management of rural veld and forest fire activities undertaken within the boundaries of the uMngeni, Impendle Local Municipalities, as well as, portions of uMshwathi, Mpofana and Msunduzi Municipalities, of Kwazulu Natal. The LRFPA was established in 2005 and was formed to allow the members to enhance effective fire prevention, protection, suppression and other fire control measures within the respective areas at risk, from uncontrolled fires for the good of the local community in general. The LRFPA is responsible for ensuring facilities and resources are available for the reduction, readiness, response and recovery from any forest or rural veld fire incident.

Area of operation

The area of operation is centered on the town of Howick and with the rural areas of Hilton, Birnamwood, Merrivale, Karkloof, Currys Post, Mount West, Tweedie, Lions River, Dargle, Lidgeton, Balgowan, Nottingham Road, Fort Nottingham, Lower Lotheni, Boston and Impendle, forming the sub-areas within the area of operation. The total area of operation is approximately 250 000 hectares, and is made up of light industry, dairy processing, furniture manufacturing, timber related agribusiness, hospitality, commercial agriculture (crop and livestock), rural community areas, and tracts of commercial timber plantations.

VISION: The Lions River Fire Protection Association will be a leader in support and innovation to its members and will provide the highest standard of excellence in the protection of the broader landowner community from veld and forest fires.

MISSION: To provide a cohesive, enthusiastic Fire Protection Association trained and equipped to meet the needs of its members and broader the community in an efficient, effective and professional manner.
